Wishing all the incredible Turner Prize artists all the best for tonight when the winner will be announced on the BBC; special fingers crossed for DELAINE @dedelebas ♡

Long story short, Delaine Le Bas has long been on my radar, my cousin Angie Kingston investigating our family’s Traveller roots, has worked and written with Delaine, and small world scenario, my dear friend Saffron Darby mentioned in passing that her sister the photographer Tara Darby has long worked with her good friend Delaine too.
So back in October I went along to their (beautiful) book launch. You can pick up a copy of the book at the @tate where you can visit the Turner Prize show until the 16 FEBRUARY 2025.

THE BOOK: “In the forest of grief I grew into a shrub of gold” which focuses on the artist Delaine Le Bas and her two decade collaboration with Tara Darby.

The TURNER PRIZE: aims to promote public debate around new developments in contemporary British art. Each year, a jury shortlists four British artists, or artists based in Britain, for outstanding exhibitions or projects held over the previous year. This year’s artists are Pio Abad, Claudette Johnson, Jasleen Kaur and Delaine Le Bas.

The prize is awarded for an artist’s nominated presentation and their Turner Prize exhibition and is broadcast on the BBC on 3 December 2024.

Morning chums - I thought you might enjoy this short film: how I get your @incredibusy Salvaged Speed Looms into your caring 🧶🪡 darning hands. I spent a day with Liz my Woodturner (and an excellent woodturning tutor if you’d like to spend a day in her woodshed too) 🪵

Sooooo this was meant to be posted Tuesday evening however what with one thing and another yesterday, the #TurningToolTuesday hashtag has morphed into #WoodturningWednesday* for one week only 🥹

Ask Liz @love_heartwood all the questions about her buffer @chestnutproducts and the Buffing Wheel Kit but I LOVE using it - so satisfying and your darning “yo-yos” are so SHINY (and so are my fingernails).

Hopefully this is helpful, wasn’t fully expecting to make a “tutorial” so it’s a bit of a shoddy video but my three Ali Clifford “takeaways” from this project are:
(a) Use two lengths of wool for strength at the edges of the cuff, as using just one is destined to break as you are wrapping the warp thread around it mid darn 😳🪡🪡🧶
(b) Use an overhead 🔦 lamp or head torch for this detail (especially if using black yarn)
(c) search @ebay_uk for tapestry yarn for interesting colours like this blue vintage thread

Evening. So back in June, I didn’t feel like sharing this repair on Instagram, as I was a little “crushed” by the mean old social media trolls on the ‘other’ ⏱️ platform, however, I saw the owner of this @mulberryengland sweater at the weekend and he’s still very happy with his new zip-pull and elbow and cuff repairs :-)

So I guess that’s all that matters, and diverts another item of clothing from landfill and creates colourful conversations about waste? Maybe. 🧶😳

Evening, how are we all? I wanted to give you a little tour of Renée Materials hub in the basement of the beautiful Shoreditch Town Hall - I popped in to see Frieda on Friday and we made a little impromtu “trailer” for a workshop we are doing together in December and I’d love for you to come along too.

A Visible Mending Workshop with a difference - this collaboration session will introduce you to repairing small holes and tears, in your favourite garment (or sock) using the incredibusy salvaged speed loom, a beautiful and mindful mending practice.

📍Renee’s Shoreditch Hub (380 Old St, EC1V 9LT)

During this calming and inspiring workshop, you’ll explore the history of darning and learn the essential techniques for using the small darning loom. You’ll practise repairing your knitwear with small weaving patterns on knit or fabric swatches provided by Renée Materials or bring something of your own to repair.

What’s included:

Tools, the incredibusy salvaged speed loom kit, scissors, and practice samples.
A variety of darning yarns and refreshments throughout the session.

Feel free to bring along a well-worn item (knits, socks, cotton, or linen) you’d like to repair and personalise.

No prior darning or sewing experience required, just bring your creativity (and a holey sock).

As a friend of Renee Materials, the incredibusy salvaged speed loom will be available to purchase on the night at 20% off the usual retail price.
