As a society, we have to do more in order to protect the world we live in not just for ourselves and our loved ones, but for many future generations that will come after we’re long gone.
Mothwe Earth is a wonderful place but we’re very quickly destroying her. With so much abuse of the environment over human existence, the climate crisis has impacted many parts of the world through freak weather conditions and natural disasters.
Doing our part to help the environment is important and we can do plenty as a household by reducing and reusing.
Buy less and shop consciously
Consider what you’re buying on a regular basis and try to be more conscious of what we say yes to buying and what we choose to put down and walk away from. There should be a number of questions we ask ourselves, before making a purchase and if we don’t answer ‘correctly’ on any one of them, it’s a purchase we probably shouldn’t be making.
Buying less is a conscious choice that we need to make but it’s one that can made in many areas of our lives and we’ll be better off for it, both financially and when wanting a more minimal living space free of clutter.
Look for repairs and fixes on existing appliances
Your appliances should last for a fairly long time, which is why you should look into repairs and fixtures on existing appliances. For example, consider what appliances might need fixing right now and where you might find OEM parts to for your dryer or filters for your air conditioning units.
It’s better to first attempt a repair or fix of an existing appliance, over trying to replace it straight away.
Avoid single-use items
Single-use items are something you should be avoiding as much as possible. From plastic cutlery to paper cups and plates. Even though some of these might be easier to use in certain scenarios, they are only contributing more damage and impact to the world by using them frequently.
Therefore it’s a good idea to avoid using single-use items wherever possible and instead go for reusable alternatives.
Donate anything you don’t need
When you’re looking to get rid of things you no longer need, beyond selling them, look to donate them to those who need them. This can be a great way of giving back to local communities and those who would benefit greatly from the donation.
The world isn’t short of needing donations in all forms, whether it be food, clothing, furniture, and more. It also helps contribute less waste to the landfills.
Buy second-hand
Another way of avoiding more furniture and stuff in general going to landfills is to buy second-hand. Check out donation shops for second-hand goods, as well as social media platforms like Vinted and Facebook Marketplace. These are all great places to buy second-hand clothing and furniture.
Reducing and reusing is something that we can all do, so make sure you’re actively doing it for the benefit of the world around you.
