Looking back through my camera roll today I am amazed at just how many sunsets and sunrises we’ve captured over the years. And there we all are, surreptitious Sun worshippers. We are drawn to this powerful natural resource.
And the Sun’s renewable energy is there just waiting to be harnessed.
I’m currently working with a community energy organisation, the Bristol Energy Cooperative, who are aiming to raise an additional £1million in community investment to help fund the further rollout of rooftop solar PV (Photovoltaic) panels and battery storage.
Community
Bristol Energy Cooperative’s installation of 72 panels at Easton Community Centre in 2012 and the subsequent addition of 91 panels four years later, demonstrate Bristol Energy Cooperative’s commitment to promoting renewable energy in the local community.
Location Easton, Bristol
Size of Installation 163 panels (42kWp)
Year of installation 2012 & 2016
Bill saving/year £4,670
The fact that the community centre is always bustling with various activities further highlights the positive impact of the cooperative’s efforts. By harnessing solar energy, the centre not only reduces its carbon footprint but also benefits from bill savings, which are massively welcomed by the Community Centre team. By involving the local community in their initiatives, Bristol Energy Cooperative fosters a sense of ownership and pride amongst its members.
The initiative to establish the “Owen Square community microgrid” is particularly innovative. By capturing and storing summer heat for use during colder months, the community centre becomes more self-sufficient and reduces its reliance on non-renewable energy sources. The bore holes drilled in the park behind the centre are an excellent example of finding creative solutions to maximize energy efficiency.
If you are interested in supporting Bristol Energy Cooperative’s project, join their share offer by investing from £100 before the 17th July 2023. (edit to add that this date has been extended)
