Eco bedroom makeover

When a teenager decides he’s grown out of his cabin bed, and budget is limited, it was time to take on the challenge – the challenging project of an eco bedroom makeover.

How many teenagers do you know who want to paint their bedroom walls BLACK? What is that?!

I’d been hearing about ‘Happy Design‘ and tried to convince the teenage boy to go for happier colours than black – the best compromise we could achieve between us, was the dark grey feature wall.

Eco matt emulsion paint

Slate grey emulsion is a slightly happier compromise. Using a 90% recycled paint from NewLife paints – the collection is called REBORN, high quality, low carbon, matt emulsion eco paint.

The REBORN Collection is reprocessed and blended unused paints. This directly reduces the amount of unwanted paint that would otherwise end up in landfill, and potentially damage the environment.

Second Hand accessories

If you are looking for a specific design of bedframe, a “hospital bed” style for example – it’s a great idea to “save a search” on ebay. The bed frame of choice for the teenager – a Feather & Black Small Double Oliver metal dorm bed in Warm White RRP £395 which we found second hand for just £100!

The vintage wooden plant-stand and dropleaf table were both my mother’s – she would be really pleased to know that they are being put to good use!

Eco paints: unfortunately at this time, NewLife paints are closed due to the impact of Covid.

There are other brands you can explore, such as CCORRN Paint Recycling Pioneers, 1st UK Paint Remanufacturing Centre for Social Reuse.

We are about to embark on teenage bedroom makeover number two next week and have some LICK paint to test – will report back – again another low VOC brand.

Linen has a lower environmental impact than Cotton. The production of linen requires less water. (read more about Linen vs Cotton here.)
