Well wow now … The @designmuseum has a new exhibition opening tomorrow, on the 11 July: MORE THAN HUMAN, how we design with and for the living world.
And, I was fortunate enough to meet, and listen to the curators, have the afternoon to look around, take it all in, and still I want to go back for more.
MORE THAN HUMAN: Why has design really only focussed on the needs of humans? When we exist alongside billions of other living beings?
These few images will give you a visual taster, however there’s so much to be inspired by, and I don’t want to spoil it for you by telling you too much. I will say, allow time to read and listen to the audio guide too – I’ll pop a link at the end of this post.
1️⃣ Transspecies Rosette by architect @andres_jaque, the skin of a building – made of cork, designed so that other species can inhabit it, making the building more of a host, for mosses, grasses, and tiny living beasties.
2️⃣ Kelp Council by Julia Lohmann, How can we use this regenerative resource responsibly, meeting our own needs while learning to care for seaweed in return? @departmentofseaweed.
3️⃣ Pollinator Pathmaker by Alexandra @DaisyGinsberg, an 8m tapestry, inspired by 2021 Eden Project commission to create an artwork for pollinators, build an algorithm (🐝see @pollinatorpathmaker) for a garden that creates the best habitat for pollinators.
4️⃣ Baskets by members of the Ye’kuana people, weaving is a deep culture of the community, everyone is a weaver. Weeds & vines are extracted in the forest, the community ask the forest for permission, and these precious forest materials, transition from nature to cultural artefacts, sacred and still natural.
5️⃣ @diana__scherer’s monumental wall hanging, not woven but was instead entirely grown out of plant roots.
6️⃣ Revisiting traditional methods: fish traps – passive fishing, allowing small young catch to escape.
7️⃣ @johannaseelemann the ancient irrigation method burying a clay pot up to its neck and filling it with water, which leeches out to surrounding plants. This process uses 70% less water than surface irrigation.
I’ve really been inspired, brilliant curation!
Let me know if plan to visit, I want to go back with you
Ali x
A really thought-provoking and inspiring exhibition – gives hope too. Kudos to the curators @JustinMcGuirk, @rebeccasophielewin
